3 folklore creatures the Souzaverse hopes to meet in Hungary

Going to Hungary next week with absolutely no expectation except meeting a folkloric witch in the woods.

✨ Manifesting the following:

🐾 Markoláb – This entity eats the sun or the moon during an eclipse. Also known as the beast that walks in sleep. Said to slink through villages under the cover of fog, Markoláb is part wolf, part shadow, part warning. Some say it drags the moon behind it like a heavy balloon, others believe it lives between dreams—appearing only when you forget to close your bedroom window properly. A creature of sleep paralysis and eerie stillness.

🐉 Sárkány – In the Hungarian culture is a weather demon. It was believed that snakes and fishes which lived seven years in swamps become dragons. Not your average dragon. Sárkány is all smoke tendrils and storm clouds—less fire-breather, more weather-bringer. In Hungarian tales, they fly with seven heads, eat the sun, and hoard storms in their bellies. A symbol of chaos and transformation.

🦌 Csodaszarvas – In ancient Hungarian legend, it led wandering hunters to new lands, new futures, new selves. The origin of the Hungarian people. Antlers like a thousand branches, hooves that barely touch the earth. Csodaszarvas is a guide from the edge of myth, it represents divine guidance and a preordained path for the Hungarian people. It's name translated is "Wonder Deer" or "Miraculous Deer".

This month’s (not so) wonky legend is Mohamed Babahoum—a late-blooming magician of line and spirit who didn’t pick up a pen until his 80s.

At first, he cheekily passed off his drawings as his grandson’s, but now he proudly shares his whimsical visions of rural Morocco: donkeys daydreaming, goats in trees, palm-fringed wells, and cane-waving elders. His bold, childlike marks dance across old boxes and scrap paper, capturing life with honesty, humour, and heart.

A reminder that wonder has no age limit—and neither does creativity.

As brands scale up their production to meet increasing demand, much of this excess material ends up in landfills, raising concerns about environmental sustainability.

This month’s (not so) wonky legend is Leonora Carrington, a surrealist powerhouse who blurred the lines between dreams and reality.

A rebellious spirit, she painted mystical creatures, eerie landscapes, and stories bursting with folklore and magic. Souza reads from her beautifully illustrated tarot deck which was lost until 2017.

As a leading force in surrealism—especially for women—she rejected convention, fleeing high society and later becoming a key figure in Mexico’s artistic and political scene. Her work was both rebellious and deeply symbolic, proving that magic, myth, and activism could coexist on the canvas.

This month let's celebrate the quirky Welsh tradition of Mari Lwyd, where a ribbon-adorned horse figure—often made from a real horse skull—brings festive luck to homes! Meaning "grey mare," this tradition blends Celtic mythology and holiday cheer. Groups would sing for entry at a home, sparking a playful, musical back-and-forth with homeowners until they were finally let inside for a drink.
