Tucked into the mountains south of Taipei, Wulai carries the gentle spirit of the Atayal people - welcoming, generous, and deeply connected to the land.

Journeyed to the mystical Sun Moon Lake - a place of nature, temples, and for quiet reflection.

Mist over the mountains, boats drifting across dappled water, it's a very beautiful place.

Still the home of the Thao people, Taiwan's smallest indigenous group. And the myths and stories run deep for this place told by them.

According to tradition, the lake was first discovered while following a white deer, its abundant waters becoming home to the tribe for generations before migration and outside influence reshaped their lands.

Another legend tells of a young Thao couple who searched for the stolen sun and moon, only to find them being toyed with by dragons in the lake. Armed with sacred tools from Mt. Ali, they defeated the beasts, restored the sky, and became the guardian mountains that still embrace the water today.

A favourite moment of yesterday (day 1) 💫

A 40-something year old man only came into the shop because he spotted this teeny spider in the window and he said it reminded him of something he had as a kid. 🕷️

He preceeded to fall in love with a teeny mouse and didn't feel like he could leave it behind, counted out change from his pocket to buy both to keep him company as he lives alone. 🐁

Honestly, someone marry this man because he was the cutest, most lovely human with excellent taste in felt creatures.

Today's spotlight lands on two brilliant Sheffield-born creators who turn everyday magic into something tangible, from dreamy illustrations to sparkly trinkets.

Whether she’s illustrating picture books, editorial features, or sketching live at events, Ella captures moments that are bursting with colour and fun and are universally human. Her playful linework and expressive characters have graced the pages of VICE, Polyester Zine, Gurls Talk, and beyond, all from her East London studio, shared with her rescue lurcher, Margot.

Ella will be doing live portrait jllustrations in store on Saturday 1 November, 11am-4pm.

A Dutch artist based in London, Sylke’s practice weaves between sculpture, textiles, and installation. Her machine-knitted garments balance precision and intuition, organic waves meeting geometric structure. Using deadstock yarns, her process is meditative: winding, threading, stitching colour and pattern into quiet rhythm. The result is minimal yet alive, wearable art that holds movement and meaning in every thread.

Run by London-based illustrator Vic, Happy Stuff Studio is a celebration of the weird and wonderful. From laser-cut acrylic jewellery to delightfully silly accessories, Vic’s world is full of creatures with big eyes, shiny smiles, and heaps of personality. Inspired by wild places, bugs, and fungi, her designs are as playful as they are precise.

3 folklore creatures the Souzaverse hopes to meet in Hungary

Going to Hungary next week with absolutely no expectation except meeting a folkloric witch in the woods.

✨ Manifesting the following:

🐾 Markoláb – This entity eats the sun or the moon during an eclipse. Also known as the beast that walks in sleep. Said to slink through villages under the cover of fog, Markoláb is part wolf, part shadow, part warning. Some say it drags the moon behind it like a heavy balloon, others believe it lives between dreams—appearing only when you forget to close your bedroom window properly. A creature of sleep paralysis and eerie stillness.

🐉 Sárkány – In the Hungarian culture is a weather demon. It was believed that snakes and fishes which lived seven years in swamps become dragons. Not your average dragon. Sárkány is all smoke tendrils and storm clouds—less fire-breather, more weather-bringer. In Hungarian tales, they fly with seven heads, eat the sun, and hoard storms in their bellies. A symbol of chaos and transformation.

🦌 Csodaszarvas – In ancient Hungarian legend, it led wandering hunters to new lands, new futures, new selves. The origin of the Hungarian people. Antlers like a thousand branches, hooves that barely touch the earth. Csodaszarvas is a guide from the edge of myth, it represents divine guidance and a preordained path for the Hungarian people. It's name translated is "Wonder Deer" or "Miraculous Deer".

This month’s (not so) wonky legend is Mohamed Babahoum—a late-blooming magician of line and spirit who didn’t pick up a pen until his 80s.

At first, he cheekily passed off his drawings as his grandson’s, but now he proudly shares his whimsical visions of rural Morocco: donkeys daydreaming, goats in trees, palm-fringed wells, and cane-waving elders. His bold, childlike marks dance across old boxes and scrap paper, capturing life with honesty, humour, and heart.

A reminder that wonder has no age limit—and neither does creativity.

The earth's first blind boxes were fukubukuro (translated as lucky bags), which were a Japanese promotion often offered by department stores during the New Year.This evolved in the 1960s into the blind boxes we know today.

The industry isn't showing any signs of slowing down. The global market is expected to grow from $2.4 million in 2024 to $4.3 million in 2025. As brands scale up their production to meet increasing demand, much of this excess material ends up in landfills, raising concerns about environmental sustainability.

This month’s (not so) wonky legend is Leonora Carrington, a surrealist powerhouse who blurred the lines between dreams and reality.

A rebellious spirit, she painted mystical creatures, eerie landscapes, and stories bursting with folklore and magic. Souza reads from her beautifully illustrated tarot deck which was lost until 2017.

As a leading force in surrealism—especially for women—she rejected convention, fleeing high society and later becoming a key figure in Mexico’s artistic and political scene. Her work was both rebellious and deeply symbolic, proving that magic, myth, and activism could coexist on the canvas.

Imagine waking up one day and deciding that with all the money you've made you're going to start a collection. A collection of splendid things. Of ceramic pieces from across the globe, so much, you just have to open a museum. Well, that's exactly what George Gardiner did and the Gardiner museum was born in Toronto in 1984.

Come with us to explore after recently reopening after a full scale transformation.

A little mention, it's currently pay what you can until the full building reopens... That means for as little as 1 Canadian Dollar (roughly 55p), you can see so much world class art. Amazing.

It's almost Christmas so...

This month let's celebrate the quirky Welsh tradition of Mari Lwyd, where a ribbon-adorned horse figure—often made from a real horse skull—brings festive luck to homes! Meaning "grey mare," this tradition blends Celtic mythology and holiday cheer. Groups would sing for entry at a home, sparking a playful, musical back-and-forth with homeowners until they were finally let inside for a drink.

Wishing you a fun and spirited Christmas! Hope you see a load of horses skulls (in the form of Mari Lwyd of course!)
